India will be taking fewer athletes to the Paris Olympics than it did in the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, but the total number will be higher because there will be more coaches, managers, and other support staff. Hope with the clearance of the full list by the sports ministry on Wednesday, the Indian Olympic Association announced that 117 athletes will be representing India at the Games, beginning on July 26, just eight days from now. This is a little improvement from the 121 athletes who participated in Tokyo.
However, the total size of the contingent has some way increased to 257 current from 228 in the Tokyo Olympics. This is attributed to 140 support staff members who will be involved in the search for the Olympics’s success. In a letter to the Indian Olympic Association chief PT Usha, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports mapped the arrangements for supporting staff.
Altogether, 67 support staff will remain within the premises of the Games Village itself. However, the Paris Organising Committee has made it clear that only a limited number of support staff can be entertained. Up to 72 more coaches and other officials have been given the green light to be funded by the government, and they are to reside outside the Games Village.
