Novak Djokovic won his third French Open title and record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title overall on Sunday, defeating Casper Ruud 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-5 in the final.
Djokovic, who was seeded first, had not lost a set en route to the final. He was in control throughout the match against Ruud, who was playing in his first Grand Slam final. Djokovic broke Ruud’s serve twice in the first set and once in the third set. He also saved all four break points he faced.
In the tiebreaker, Djokovic won the first five points to take a commanding lead. Ruud fought back to win two points, but Djokovic closed out the set with an ace. Djokovic broke Ruud’s serve in the opening game of the second set and never looked back. He won the set 6-3. The third set was more competitive, but Djokovic eventually prevailed 7-5.
With the victory, Djokovic moved into sole possession of second place on the all-time Grand Slam list. He is now one behind Rafael Nadal, who is sidelined with a foot injury.
Djokovic also became the oldest French Open champion at the age of 36 years and 20 days. The victory was a major boost for Djokovic, who has been struggling with form in recent months. He had not won a Grand Slam title since the 2021 Australian Open.
The win also puts Djokovic in a strong position to win the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, which begin on June 27. Djokovic is the defending champion at Wimbledon and is the overwhelming favorite to win the title again this year.thumb_upthumb_downuploadGoogle itmore_vert
