Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh: In the ongoing Khelo India Movement being held in Ghaziabad, a Maharashtra-based weightlifter has set a new record. Akanksha Vyavahare lifted 60 kg weight in the 40kg Youth Girls Category. This feat has been achieved by her on the first day of the Khelo India movement in the National Ranking Women’s Phase two weightlifting tournament. She lifted another 71 kgs in the clean and jerk category which earned her a total day’s lifting of 131 kgs.

Present in the match was the Olympics silver medal winner Mirabai Chanu who is also a weightlifter. She applauded Akanksha on her feat and also spoke about the importance of such women’s leagues in the nation. She said, “The leagues are very important as many girls are coming across and representing different States and UTs of India. The exposure being provided will be very beneficial for all girls in the coming future.”

She further added, “This is a big platform, especially for the young generation and the new crop of weightlifters who have just started. Many of the girls are doing very well. This will show up in the coming years for India as to who will be doing the nation proud in weightlifting”.
