Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj entered a career-best slot in the newest face on the ICC Test rankings. His match-winning heroics in the last and the fifth test in the series, the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, played at the Oval this year. Siraj posted a brilliant performance to propel India to a breathtaking six-run win to draw the five-match series at 2-2.

Siraj played a role in this victory of India, taking nine wickets in the game. He pounded four in the initial innings and came in to bowl with a superb five-wicket haul in the second innings, making it his 5th five-wicket haul in the Test match. His match-winning performances were to get rid of the main English batsmen and then to have the final wicket of Gus Atkinson to complete India’s success. Siraj was the Player of the Match because of his outstanding performance.

This led to Siraj going 12 places, to 15th, in the ICC Test bowling rankings, with the highest being 16th in January 2024. Jasprit Bumrah, who rested two games in the series, including the finale, is the leader in ratings at 889 rating points.

In the meantime, India captain, Shubman Gill, had a terrific series with the bat, yet declined to the top 10 of the Test batting rankings. Gill scored an all-time high 754 runs in 10 innings – an Indian cricket record as well as the 2nd in the history after Don Bradman against England in 1937. A severe Test, however, which netted him but 32 runs, a quiet outing and a descent of four places further to 13th place.

His prolific form, which saw him get several centuries and partnerships, saw him adjudged as Player of the Series. Although there have been individual disappointments with individual ranking, the series draw against England has exhibited the rise in form by Siraj in the bowling department, as well as the consistency of Gill in the batting department.
