The emergence of the left-arm spinner, Manav Suthar, is now a good chance of his maiden India Test in the team as the senior selection panel is about to announce the India team to face West Indies in a two-match series on Wednesday. Its series that is to start on 2 October will see the visitors received in India in Ahmedabad and Delhi.
The 23-year-old, an Indian born in Rajasthan, is stirring up a storm in the domestic scene, especially with his recent performance on the Indian A team. Suthar had a career-best performance in the continuing non-first-class game against Australia A at Lucknow, ending the first day with the score of 350/9. His trickery and precision felled the Australian batting line and grabbed key wickets at the right time, and the opposition was reeling on.
The selectors of India, as they have been keen to infuse some new talent into the national setup, have been reported to have considered fast-tracking Suthar as a larger plan to raise the next generation of spinners. According to an insider of BCCI, the spinner has long been on the radar, and his performance against a formidable Australia A batting line-up has only helped him to prove his point. It is evident that the board is willing to develop him together with stalwarts like Ravindra Jadeja.
At the same time, Jadeja is currently taking a routine fitness test at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru after a short break following the England tour. The old orthodox left-arm who had a batting campaign in England to be proud of (a century and three fifties in the Tests) will not fail to join the side in the series against the West Indies. His presence will present an effective combination of experience and mentoring to the novice spinners.
This time, against Australia A, which was 144 out of 2, Suthar reversed the fortunes of the match. He made use of flight, slight changes, and incessant precision to claim wickets of Oliver Peake (29), Cooper Connolly (0), and Josh Philippe (39). After taking the break, he came back and took the tail-enders Will (10) and Corey (2) to make it a five-wicket haul. The fact that he could attack on a consistent schedule and maintain the run-rate highlighted his preparation for the next tier.
Suthar has already accumulated 95 wickets in 23 first-class matches and demonstrates stamina, control, and an ability to pick up a wicket in any conditions. As the eyes of the selectors focus on him and Jadeja backs him up, a new attacking force could soon be introduced through the Indian spin attack.
