A teenage Barcelona football star, Lamine Yamal, has been put under the spotlight of a government probe involving his 18th birthday party. The criticism appeared following the claims that the dwarfs were employed as entertainers at the private party in Olivella, which is a town located about 50 kilometres west of Barcelona.
The Ministry of Social Rights in Spain has already confirmed that it had petitioned the prosecutor’s office to probe the incident. This action is after an official complaint was put across by the Association of People with Achondroplasia and other Skeletal Dysplasias with Dwarfism (ADEE). The complaint based on the Ministry aims at establishing whether the act of employing such persons to entertain people goes against any law or questions the rights of the disabled.
The ADEE openly condemned the practice and said that the practice of hiring people with dwarfism as entertainers in the party only deepens negative stereotypes about them and treats their condition as an object. Although supposedly, guests were not permitted to record the birthday party, a viral video was witnessed on the internet that caused anger and controversy when a gang of people with dwarfism arrived at the location.
Yet, one of the performers in the viral video has come out to justify his or her involvement. When grilled by a media house named RAC1, the entertainer made it clear that the group operated within the restrictions of the law, was not exploited, and did it of their own will. “We are ordinary individuals who stick to what we like doing to the best of the legal limit,” as he put it. The performer also blamed ADEE for attempting to deny them work without providing other sources of support, training, and work.
According to him, nobody showed disrespect, and the whole case would not have been that huge except that Lamine Yamal is such a high-profile person.
Lamine Yamal, who had an outstanding season with Barcelona, where the club won the La Liga, Copa del Rey and Supercopa, is one of the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or.
