Former IPL boss Lalit Modi has hit out strongly at Bhuvneshwari Sreesanth, wife of former India pacer S Sreesanth, after she took on the former for sharing the infamous ‘Slapgate’ video from the 2008 IPL along with Australian cricketer Michael Clarke. One of the most controversial incidents in the league’s history was the moment when Harbhajan Singh slapped Sreesanth during a highly-charged match between the Mumbai Indians and the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). Harbhajan later received a match ban for 11 games, and the incident had a long-lasting impact on both the cricketers’ careers.

Recently, in a podcast with Clarke, Modi has shown previously unseen footage of the incident, and reanimated the tentacles of the long-running controversy. In reply, Bhuvneshwari took to Instagram and was outraged in a series of stories. She described Modi’s and Clarke’s behaviour as “disgusting, heartless and inhuman,” underlining that reopening the episode caused considerable distress to their family.

However, Lalit Modi hit back, defending his decision to post the video. Speaking to the media, Modi said, “I don’t know why she’s getting angry. I was asked for the truth, and I gave the truth. I can’t do anything about that. I am known to speak the truth. Sree was the victim, and that’s just what I said. I’d never received this question before, so when Clarke quipped, I replied,” Modi insisted that his intention was only to lay out the facts of the incident and no personal harm.

Over the years, both the cricketers involved – Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth – have moved on publicly from the episode. Harbhajan has confessed several times that the slap should never have happened, and regretted the controversy. For his part, Sreesanth has revisited the incident in interviews, always paying homage to Harbhajan’s craft and respecting the veteran off-spinner.
