After quitting T20Is in 2024 and an abrupt Test retirement earlier this year, the world of cricket has been waiting to see Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma take the field again in the national colours. They were anticipated to make their comeback at the time of India when they played in Bangladesh in the month of August 2025 in the build-up to the ODI World Cup 2027. Nevertheless, the resurgence of their squads can no longer be possible immediately since certain governmental authorisation is still not available, as recognised by the Board of Control in Cricket in India (BCCI).

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had formally announced the schedule of the tour in April, with the cricket lovers getting treated to a three-match ODI series between August 17, 20 and 23, and a three-T20I series on August 26, 29 and 31. The games were to be played in Mirpur and Chattogram. Even though the tour is highly scheduled, BCCI has not given it official confirmation.

BCB President Aminul Islam revealed after the 19th board meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, “I have already talked to BCCI. There have been fruitful discussions. This is something we hope but they await some government approvals.”

In case BCCI does not get a clearance on time, the prospects of Kohli and Rohit returning to international cricket can be delayed until the Australia tour in October, when India will play three ODIs, which begin on October 19. Cricket Australia is said to come up with some special commemoration for the two players, as this may be the last time they will ever tour Australia.

Aminul was confident, saying that India will tour Bangladesh in the following available window in case August fails. “The BCCI has been cooperative and professional. Negotiations are still on the table and we are optimistic,” he answered.
