A new controversy on the role of a modern-day head coach was created by former India captain Kapil Dev on Thursday when he said that Gautam Gambhir can not be a coach in his traditional sense but can be termed as a team manager. These remarks by Kapil are issued in process when Gambhir is under the pressure after his 0-2 Test series loss to South Africa and critics have questioned his style in terms of constant change of players and use of part times players.
In the speech given at the ICC Centenary Session of the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Kapil emphasized that the meaning of coaching has been altered in modern international cricket. He presented the argument that professional training is not necessary anymore in the traditional technical training of the elite. Coach is a word that is used in a very casual way nowadays. Gautam Gambhir can not be a coach at all, he could be a team manager at best, Kapil said.
Demonstrating the difference, Kapil pointed to the fact that coaching, in its real sense, is part of the tender years of a player. A coach refers to a person whom you study at school or college. Such coaches train you in fundamentals. On a global level, the position involves more management of the players, he added.
Kapil also raised the question of whether a head coach was in a position to give technical contributions to supremely specialised players. But how can a head coach coach a leg-spinner or a wicketkeeper? Every participant is already a master of his art, it seems to me, so the technical directing no longer seems to be the main task of the coach of the team.
Rather, Kapil pointed out that leadership in the contemporary teams is all about man-management and motivation. In his opinion, the task of a manager is to motivate players and inspire them, particularly younger players, in the squad. It is important to make the place comfortable, he said, in order to be successful.
