J&K Police summons a local cricketer and a person who organised a privately-run cricket tournament, the Jammu and Kashmir Police called him to the police station after a Palestinian flag was allegedly flown in Jammu during a match. The action was triggered by images of a cricketer sporting a helmet that had the Palestinian flag attached to the front, which was taken by a camera lens during the cricketer as he was batting.
The police reported in a statement that the player involved and the organizer of the tournament had also been summoned to determine the events leading to the raising of the flag. The officials have summoned one of the cricketing players and the organizer of the tournament on the Palestinian flag being used on a helmet during a cricket match in a personal tournament in Jammu.
As reported, the cricketer under interrogation is found to be Furqan Bhat. The accident occurred on Wednesday when one of the matches between JK11 Kings and Jammu Trailblazers were taking place in the current Jammu and Kashmir Champions League. It has attracted controversy when the flag appeared (during the game) after it had been noticed on broadcast footage.
According to police officials, the questioning will be done to find out whether any prior authorization was sought or obtained to display such symbols during the match. They also are looking at whether the act was against any rule, guidelines or provisions of law that govern public exhibits during sporting events.
The authorities made a clarification that the tournament in question is privately run local league and has no association with any international or national body in the field of cricket.
The police emphasized the fact that there is nothing done yet and that the case is at the initial stage. Verification is a continuous process, facts are being determined. The officials said that any subsequent plan of action will be determined only after due diligence has been done.
