Reports indicate Jasprit Bumrah, star pacer for the Mumbai Indians (MI), will not recover in time for at least the next two matches of the ongoing 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). Bumrah has been recovering from stress-related lower back issues since January, and according to a report, he is still going through fitness tests and rehabilitating at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. But his return will depend on medical clearance from BCCI’s medical team.

Although the setback, there is optimism surrounding Bumrah’s recovery. The bowling workload has been steadily increased and close to the end of the fitness assessments. The right-arm pacer was focused on the full recovery over a rushed comeback to India’s important five-match Test series against England starting June 20. It seems the tour is as taxing as ever, so Jasprit Bumrah and the medical team are being very conscientious not to have him under-prepared for the first bells of the Islamabad Invitational.

But for Mumbai Indians, who have so far had a not-so-successful beginning to their IPL 2025 campaign, the loss of Bumrah is certainly beginning to feel. To make up for it, the team has relied on the services of seasoned pacers like Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar while providing opportunities to talented bowlers in the background like Satyanarayana Raju, Vignesh Puthur and Ashwani Kumar. Skipper Hardik Pandya has filled the void vacated by pace bowling options as a second bowler in the attack.

MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene last updated on Bumrah’s fitness on March 19, when he said MI face challenges playing without their paceman. But the hopes of his return in April have been dashed, and MI will have to wait a little longer before their ace fast bowler returns.
