Jasprit Bumrah’s performances in 2024 were just stellar as he rightfully took home the prestigious ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award as one of the best bowlers of modern cricket. Indian speedster showed his skill in seeping conditions as well as overseas and displayed an ability to take wickets in whatever conditions he was in.
Bumrah outperformed England’s Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis to take this award. He also becomes the first Indian pacer to receive this award, following in the footsteps of Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli, who have won the trophy before.
India’s success at home and abroad was in no small part down to the 31-year-old. India won at home against England and Bangladesh because of his supreme form, as he did in other tours overseas of South Africa and Australia. Bumrah took an astonishing 71 Test wickets across the year, more than England’s Gus Atkinson, who finished with 52 wickets in 11 matches. An average of 14.92 with a strike rate of 30.1 struck, and the ability to tear major batting units to pieces quickly was a pretty transparent trait in Bumrah’s game.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled 357 overs in Tests to underline his endurance and work ethic but was best known for his wicket-taking exploits. He became the fourth Indian bowler in Test cricket after Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev to reach more than 70 wickets in a calendar year.
