Jannik Sinner wrote another chapter in the history books of tennis on Sunday by beating Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in a Centre Court classic to win the first of his career at Wimbledon. Having gained this gorgeous win, Sinner took his fourth Grand Slam tournament yet also became the first Italian in the history of this event to win what is known as the exclusive Wimbledon title. The current world number one, who turns 23 years of age later this week, got his own back on the 19-year-old Alcaraz, who had beaten him in a heartbreaking French Open final just a few weeks ago.
It was particularly sweet to Sinner, who had lost the last 5 matches to Alcaraz in a row, with the last one being a dramatic end at the Italian Open, his first tournament since emerging from a 3-month-long doping ban. Sinner had previously lost a two-set lead in the second round at Roland Garros, when three match points up, losing to Aslan Karatsev after only one more point. However, at Wimbledon, he reversed the flow in an overpowering way.
The two were off to a good start in the Sunday final, where they both had serves. However, the game started to shift towards Sinner during the fifth game because Alcaraz hit a forehand long, which provided Sinner the first break. Spain managed to come back and earn a draw of 4-4 in front of a star-studded audience that had Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales. Alcaraz had his shining moments when he saved a set point with a magical backhand winner that brought the crowd to a roaring standing ovation, but that was not enough to halt the Sinner.
This victory puts the Sinner-Alcaraz rivalry ahead of schedule and makes it the next great tennis saga that replaces the trios of Federer-Nadal-Djokovic in history. The two young talents have learned how to win 7 of the recent Grand Slam events, signifying the beginning of a new season of exciting events in men’s tennis.
