Hangzhou: Indian para squad has created history by winning the highest number of medals in the Asian Para Games, taking the country’s tally to 82, including 18 gold. Earlier in 2018, India achieved 72 medals in Indonesia.

Pramod Bhagat, India’s ace Para-badminton player, won the gold medal in the men’s singles SL3 event at the Asian Para Games 2023 on October 27. He defeated his compatriot Nitesh Kumar in the final, 21-19, 18-21, 21-19, in a thrilling match that lasted for 53 minutes.
Bhagat’s victory was a historic one, as it marked the first time that an Indian Para-badminton player had won a gold medal in the singles event at the Asian Para Games. It was also a personal triumph for Bhagat, who had been working hard towards this goal for many years.
Bhagat is a highly decorated Para-badminton player. He has won several medals at major international tournaments, including the World Para-Badminton Championships and the BWF Para-Badminton World Tour. He is currently ranked world number one in the men’s singles SL3 category.

Earlier on Thursday, Meerut’s Zainab Khatun and Delhi’s Rajkumari clinching silver and bronze medals in the 61kg weight category respectively. This marked their inaugural appearance at the Asian Games, and their performances hinted at a promising future for these emerging athletes in the upcoming Paris Olympics.
In addition to Khatun and Rajkumari’s achievements, India also secured a record-breaking 18th gold medal of the Asian Para Games on Thursday, thanks to Sachin Sarjerao Khilari’s victory in the men’s F-46 shot put. Khilari breached the Games Record mark by registering a throw of 16.03m, helping India surpass its best-ever gold medal tally in the Asian Para Games.
