This was a continuation of a phenomenal turn of fortunes that Shubman Gill has been enjoying in 2025 as India completed his fifth century of the year when the team registered a resounding 518/5 against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley stadium in the second Test. His positive and fluent innings were full of composure and aggression, and this enabled India to take mastery of the match. The Indian captain had decided to announce after this milestone, which put the weak batting line-up of the West Indies under a lot of pressure.
India, however, did not begin well on Day 2. Yashasvi Jaiswal was sent back in only the second over, and Gill had to carry the burden and make sure that India did not lose a bit of its momentum. With all his characteristic composure and self-possession, Gill regained the initiative in no time, and the score was made against him at a greater rate, the Windies bowlers keeping close to the defensive. His power of using good technique and aggressive stroking has once again brought to the fore why he has been regarded as one of the most dependable top-order batsmen in India.
The West Indies, however, have not endeavoured to discover their footing in this series. It could be the influence of India in the well-known home pitches or the internal flaws in the Windies team, but their performances have never been intense enough to fight against a high-quality Indian team. The first day alone was already marked with huge alliances, as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan were chasing the opponent with grinding and exhausting both bowlers. Even though Sudharsan just missed a century, Jaiswal is where he wants to be with another double century in sight, even though he is making runs very fast.
With India seeking to impose a dominant stance, pressure has now been shifted to the top order of the West Indies. Gill has been trying other partnerships with Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar, trying to exploit any weakness in the Windies’ batting.
