New Delhi: With the Olympics 2020 in progress, India scored its first victory in the international multi-gaming championship. Mirabai Chanu, weightlifter representing India bagged a silver medal in 49-kg category in women’s weightlifting event making it India’s first medal at Olympics 2020. China’s Zhihu Hou took the gold medal in the same category of the event.
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is an Indian weightlifter who has won multiple World Championships and secured multiple medals at Commonwealth Games 2018. She was also awarded with Padma Shri in 2018 by the Government of India for her contributions in sport.
Meanwhile, Sumit Nagpal made an eventful beginning in the first round of Tennis singles competing against Denis Istomin. The thrilling combat lasted for 2 hours and 34 minutes before it ended up in favor of the Indian player. With this, he has booked himself a date with World No. 2 Russian Daniil Medvedev in the second round. The last time Indian won an Olympic medal in Tennis was in 1996 when legendary player Leander Paes won a Bronze medal.
India’s shooter Saurabh Chaudhary finished seventh at the final of 10-meter air pistol men’s event. The 19-year old settled for a total score of 137.4 and faced an early elimination. Indian players will also be seen participating in judo, rowing, tennis, table tennis, badminton, and boxing events on the second day.
