The Indian Premier League 2025 has been put on indefinite hold because of increasing security concerns, which have arisen after a sudden escalation of military tensions between India and Pakistan reported by a leading news agency on Thursday. The decision is after a series of worrisome events, such as the cancellation of the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala, which was stopped in midgame because of safety concerns.

Situated well within a range of less than 100km from Pathankot, where air raid alerts rang out earlier in the day, the Dharamsala stadium has become a magnet for the developing crisis. The IPL game, which was already delayed because of rain, was abruptly brought to a stop as the floodlights in the stadium expired, initially thought to be a technical fault. The atmosphere changed completely when players and match officials were given an outline of possible security threats.

Eyewitnesses distinguished visible panic among team members, especially foreign players. A player speaking to the media said the scene was “tense,” with several Australian players particularly on edge and allegedly eager to go home. The Australian media houses also confirmed that security had been raised as an issue.

The crowd that had taken up almost 80% of the venue was evacuated with haste for safety concerns. As the spectators left, they heard anti-Pakistan slogans all across the stands, and that only reinforced the alarmed population’s emotions during the geopolitical crisis.

In reaction to it, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL Governing Council also met in a flurry of urgent discussions over the fate of the tournament. The league’s continuation was unclear, Arun Dhumal, IPL Chairman, declared, and would be dependent upon official instruction from the Indian government that was yet to be provided, as of Thursday night.
