India national cricket team again emphasized their supremacy in white ball cricket by beating the New Zealand national cricket team in the ICC Men T20 World Cup for 2nd time in a row and winning the competition. The win also boosted the reputation of India as one of the most successful teams in the limited-overs format.
The victory was also the fourth consecutive white-ball title of India. Prior to this triumph, the team had already won the ICC Champions Trophy and the Asia cup in 2025 which sustained an impressive streak of performance in international tournaments. The T20I format has been especially favored by India, who have lost just one match in the past two T20 World Cups as well as the Asia Cup combined yet have won 23 of their last 24 matches.
Even as the celebrations continue, attention in Indian cricket will be shifted very soon towards challenges in the future. After the Indian Premier League 2026 season is over, the tournament will then center on the 50-over game with the 2027 ODI world cup underway in South Africa. Nevertheless, an even larger redrawing might be necessary in the T20 format before the overstretched 2028 international schedule.
It is believed that 2028 will be a key year in T20 cricket as the sport will also reappear in the Summer Olympics with another T20 World Cup also planned later in the year. Such happenings might demand a new team and strategic thinking.
A good part of the success that India is enjoying today has been achieved under the leadership of the chief selector Ajit Agarkar who is known to adopt bold and even controversial decisions. Since the 2023 ODI World Cup, Agarkar has made a significant contribution to building the present white-ball team when collaborating with head coach Gautam Gambhir.
