Mitchell Santner starred with the ball for New Zealand as India fell for 156 on the second day of the second Test in Pune.

India was bowled out for 156, with all wickets down considerably behind New Zealand’s first innings, totaling 259, and New Zealand started their lead with 103 runs. Santner, who had never got more than three wickets in the Test innings, was a standout as he took 7/53.

Glenn Philips bowled well and took a couple of wickets for New Zealand, while Tim Southee got the scalp of Indian captain Rohit Sharma on the first day of the test.

India’s middle order crumbled, especially at the onset of the first session, when they had drinks and could never come back again. Shubman Gill started the day well but perished early in the morning, scalping 30 off 72 deliveries and having a second-wicket stand of 49 with Yashasvi Jaiswal.

After Gill’s dismissal, Kohli failed to put this to his advantage, being clean-bowled by Santner after he mistimed a full toss.

Rishabh Pant tried to bail the team out, but the middle order could not apply a solid total, and Jaiswal was out to Phillips’ bowling right after both teams took a drinks break. Phillips pressed on, getting the vital wicket of Pant when the Indian batsman tried to hit out and was completely beaten.

India went to bat on the second morning, at 16 for 1, after they lost Rohit Sharma without scoring in the eleventh over of the first day. In his pitch report while coming to bat, Dinesh Karthik said that it would not be easy to bat as New Zealand’s spinners Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, and Mitchell Santner would get good turns and bounce if they kept up with the speed between 84 km to 94 km.
