India bowling coach Morne Morkel has given some clarity on Hardik Pandya and Abhishek Sharma, before the much-anticipated Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan. His remarks followed the narrow victory of India over Sri Lanka in a tense Super Over finale in the last match of the Super 4s at Dubai International Stadium.

In an interview with the media, Morkel confirmed that the two players had been pulled out of the field because of cramps when Sri Lanka was on the offensive. He confirmed that Abhishek Sharma is okay, and that Hardik Pandya will be reviewed further on Saturday, and a conclusive decision as to his availability will then be made.

Hardik had been observed being visibly uncomfortable in the opening over of the chase by Sri Lanka. He sent Kusal Mendis to the ground with the first ball, and, picking up his hamstring on the left side, he left the field never to reappear during the rest of the innings. It was a tense match, and his absence forced India to reorganise its bowling forces.

Abhishek Sharma also had problems with cramping. He was caught in the 9th over with his right thigh and walked out of the field soon afterwards, in the 10th over. The remaining innings were spent by both players being covered in ice packs and pickle juice- these are widely used as a means of cramp relief and recovery.

“And both of them had cramps at the game,” explained Morkel. “Hardik, I know we will evaluate this evening and the following morning and call. Abhishek is fine.”

Morkel also confirmed that no training will be undertaken by India on Saturday, September 27, so the squad can rest before the final on Sunday. He added that already the players are underway to recovery protocols such as ice baths and rest.
