India vs Pakistan games have never been dull affairs, and another episode in the rich history of the rivalry will play out on Sunday during the 2025 Asia Cup. Although Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were subsequently retired in T20Is after India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, the Men in Blue continued to be remarkably deep and provided replacements easily as it continues to dominate the world arena.
In an interview, former India pace bowler Atul Wassan commented, “The strength of India’s bench is so high that even a B team can beat Pakistan easily. Contemplating the change in the dynamics of cricketing, he said, when we played in the 90s, Pakistan were a force to reckon with. The shoe is now on the other foot. I would not miss Rohit and Kohli, as then I would also have to miss legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev.”
He also added that the game continues to evolve, and with each new era, new stars are coming out. Summarising the point, he said, “The king is dead, long live the king.” Wassan trimmed the point that Indian cricket has brought out a selection issue of the BCCI through its embarrassment of riches. There are numerous good players, and in most cases, the selectors have a difficult time choosing which player to include or which player to drop.
In a similar sentiment, the former India spinner, Piyush Chawla, observed that the present Indian team has managed the era of post-Kohli and Rohit with ease. He added that since they have lost two of their most prominent modern-day icons, India has still been winning again and again. Chawla focused on the talent pool, saying that a talent such as Arshdeep Singh, who is among the top five T20 bowlers in the world, has difficulties getting into the playing XI. “The high standards of the IPL,” he says, “have made Indian cricketers so ready that there has not been a transition phase.”
