Rohit Sharma became the fastest Indian to smash a century in ICC World Cup on just 63 balls, a world record previously held by legend Kapil Dev, who smashed World Cup century in 72 balls.

“Rohit Sharma becomes the batter with the most cricket world cup hundreds with a belligerent ton against Afghanistan”, tweeted ICC

Everyone in Arun Jaitley Stadium stood on their food to appreciate his record as he now stands on top with 7 centuries. Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar is on second with 6 centuries, and Sri Lanka’s former skipper Kumar Sangakkara is on third on the list with 5 centuries.

Rohit Sharma peeled off a record-breaking century in Delhi on Wednesday, scoring the fastest World Cup century by an Indian in just 63 balls. He broke the previous record of Kapil Dev, which had stood for 40 years.

Sharma’s century was part of a blistering opening partnership with Ishan Kishan, who also scored a half-century. The pair put on 150 runs in just 19 overs, giving India a flying start in the chase of 273.

Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah returned figures of 4/39 to help India restrict Afghanistan to 272/8 in 50 overs. Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai scored half-centuries and stitched a 121-run stand for the 4th wicket to rescue the innings after a top-order collapse.

India won the toss and opted to bowl first, keeping the dew factor in mind. They made one change to their side, replacing Ravichandran Ashwin with Shardul Thakur.
