The International Cricket Council (ICC) has clarified an error in the number of days that Virat Kohli is ranked in the No.1 position in the men ODI cricket list since there was confusion about all-time ranking. The revision drastically changes the historical stand of Kohli as he has proven to be among the longest serving top rank ODI batters in the history of the sport.
Kohli returned to the number one position in the latest update of the ODI rankings following a match winning 93 off 91 balls against the New Zealand in Vadodara. This is the first update since July 2021 that he was not occupying the No.1 position. In the first release of ICC, Kohli was wrongly claimed to have 825 days at the top at No.1 which was published in the chart of the most days at the top.
The ICC has since corrected the statistic and now, it has been confirmed that Kohli has used 1,547 days as the number one ODI batter. This makes him the third-placed in the all-time list, only after Viv Richards (2,306 days) and Brian Lara (2,079 days). The fact the correction not only solidifies Kohli as a leading ODI batter in India in terms of years at the top but also makes him a reoccurring theme of making it to the top at various times, as opposed to one continuous run.
This previous record of 825 days had diminished his influence and placed him out of the elite category though he had been performing well over the years. Now with the updated number, Kohli passes a number of the modern-day greats and establishes himself as one of the most dominant and long-lasting ODI batters in the history of the sport of cricket. Analysts indicate that the fixed number is a more genuine acknowledgment of his exploits and impact in the field of limited-overs cricket.
