Despite the best efforts of the ICC, the Champions Trophy issue between India and Pakistan appears to be unsolved. With the global championship just 75 days away, the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Board of Control for Cricket in India have yet to be brought to the table by the highest authority in world cricket.
The final Champions Trophy schedule was supposed to be announced on December 11; however, the international organization made no announcements. Even there is no information about the ICC meeting with the board members, which was supposed to take place on December 7. The last meeting was adjourned since there was no agreement on how to conduct the eight-team competition.
Those responsible for decision-making are deeply concerned about the future of ICC tournaments until 2027. Now the Champions Trophy will be contested in a hybrid model in which India will play its matches in Dubai or Sri Lanka. But the main matter of concern at present is that the BCCI is refusing Pakistan’s demand to organize ICC events in a hybrid model in India.
After ICC’s final warning, the PCB is under pressure because it can’t say no to the hybrid model. The Pakistan board officials expressed their desire for a tri-series with India, but their request faced rejection.
The broadcasters are under pressure since they are unable to promote the Champions Trophy, and the ICC has missed the 90-day deadline for revealing the schedule. Some stakeholders may pressure the ICC to host the competition in the T20 format, according to reports. Given that T20 matches sell more quickly than ODIs, which are becoming less relevant, this could aid in marketing.
