Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has confirmed that he is not going to take part in the upcoming Indian premier league (IPL) which is the first time in seven years he will not take part in the tournament. On Tuesday, Maxwell 37, stated that he is opting out of the IPL 2026 player auction, which will be held in mid-December in Abu Dhabi.
Glenn Maxwell posted the news in his social media page, stating that he is very grateful to the years he has spent in the IPL. “I don’t want to do my name in the auction this year after experiencing some memorable years in the IPL. It is a tremendous statement, and I make it with many thanks to all that this league has done me.” He stated that IPL had made him not only a cricketer, but also an individual. I have been fortunate to play alongside some of the most skilled players in the world, have represented some of the best franchises and have played before some of the most passionate fans. The recollections, the struggles and the dynamism of India will remain with me forever, he said.
The rumor of Maxwell being out started when his name was conspicuously absent on the 13 page list of the 1,355 players that were registered in the mini-auction. His choice follows a poor 2025 season with the Punjab Kings where he could only score 48 runs and take four wickets in six games. Taking a hit on the finger also interrupted Maxwell season when he was sidelined part way through by the fracture, and replaced by his fellow Australian, Mitchell Owen.
The Punjab Kings had on three occasions signed Maxwell in his IPL career for INR 4.2 crore after representing the team between 2014 and 2017, and once again in 2021. In the early part of this year Maxwell stepped down of ODI commitments and this further decreased his international and franchise obligations.
