India fought in vain in the top order in the T20 world cup 2026 where an opener got a duck in four consecutive games. It was Ishan Kishan, who was fired in the first over itself by the South Africa captain Aiden Markram. Early pressure had the early attention to Abhishek Sharma who had gone through a torturous tournament without even scoring a run before the match.

Abhishek got off to a great start, hitting a boundary with his first delivery and then upper-cutting Kagiso Rabada to a six. But the temporary bloom did not come to represent a good innings. He later got sacked by Marco Jansen and India was left to spin at 26/3 following the departure of Tilak Varma who also left cheaply. This initial failure was fatal with India not getting back and losing miserably by 76 runs in the pursuit of 188. The defeat was a big blow to their campaign bringing their net run rate to -3.8.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar also contributed to the constant failure of Abhishek by telling him to reduce his ultra-aggressive style. Gavaskar proposed that Abhishek should work at taking his time at the crease than trying to hit big shots at the very beginning. His fearless approach has helped him to rise to the No. 1 position in T20I batter ranking list before, but the all-time great cricketer feels that it won’t do so without adaptation.

The lean run by Abhishek is especially fascinating considering he had dominated the Asia cup making 302 runs and contributing largely to the victory of India in the competition.
