When the new head coach of the Indian team, Gautam Gambhir assumed power, there was so much pressure. Gambhir had just mentored Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL championship in 10 years after India had just won the T20 World Cup 2024. As Rahul Dravid retired at the end of a fruitful career, there was expectant smooth sailing ahead. The entrance of Gambhir into the dressing room was received with vigor and positive thinking. But what had been promised, presently yielded to a difficult pursuit.
Shortly after Gambhir became captain, India lost a series of ODIs in Sri Lanka, the first time they have lost a series in 28 years. The fight went on with India losing 1-3 to Australia as it lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after seven years. The pressure also was alleviated by a home Test loss that was the first in 12 years. In the 18 months of his rule the setbacks have exceeded the successes but in the Champions Trophy, a previous Asia Cup and a drawn series in England have been highlights of success.
Gambhir too has come under fire due to alleged conflicts with the senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. In the storm, he has recently made an emotional confession about the emotional cost of working at the top of coaching. In one of the BCCI videos, Gambhir talked of how lonely it is when you are away on tour and how nice it is to go home and see the family back in Delhi.
He described coaching as a tough profession and added that it was crucial to have staffs of trust that are incorporated as family members. As India is one of the favourites of the T20 world cup, Gambhir has worked towards maintaining a light dressing room atmosphere, which brings unity, laughter, and belief among the team members.
