The head coach of the Indian cricket team, Gautam Gambhir, soon shifted his eyes to the course correction, as the team heavily lost to South Africa, and soon after the team landed in Chennai on Monday, Gautam Gambhir was seen having an animated discussion with his opener, Abhishek Sharma. This happened in the team bus as India geared up to their most important Super 8 match of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

India have just lost by 76 runs to South Africa in Ahmedabad, the most they have ever lost in the World Cup. The outcome was also the first they lost in 18 games in ICC white-ball tourism and the last game they lost had been during the final of the 2023 ODI world cup against Australia in the same venue.

Abhishek Sharma who emerged to limelight last year with his fearless and explosive batting in the T20 format has had a hard-time during this tournament. He opened with three ducks in succession and though he scored 15 in 12 balls on South Africa, he never seemed to look relaxed at the crease. He was later sacked by Marco Jansen with a well-disguised knuckleball worsening the initial problems of India.

Although there is increasing pressure and rising demands to include Sanju Samson in the playing XI, the management of the team seems to be in support of Abhishek. One of the viral videos on social media depict Gambhir talking emphatically to the young opener, possibly about some technical fine tuning and clarity of tactics before the must-win match against Zimbabwe on the MA Chidambaram Stadium on February 6.
