NEW DELHI: Delhi police has filed FIR against protest organisers and others in connection with the scuffle that broke out at Jantar Mantar, earlier today.
The case was filed following the detention of several wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, her cousin Sangeeta Phogal and Sakshi Malik as they attempted a march towards the newly inaugrated Parliament building.
FIR has been filed under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 147, 149, 186, 188, 332, 353, Section 3 of the PDPP Act. They have been accused of rioting, unlawful assembly and obstructing public servants in their duty. The wrestlers were pushed into buses and taken to different unknown locations, as per reports. The Delhi Police cleared the protest site and removed cots, mattresses, coolers, fans and the tarpaulin ceiling.
“We were marching peacefully but they forcefully dragged and detained us,” says wrestler Sakshi Malik after being detained by police.
Hours later, the DCW chief Swati Maliwal wrote to Delhi Police Commissioner, demanding arrest of WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, release of wrestlers and action on the officers who detained them.
Videos from the spot showed the champions being shoved, pushed, pinned down to the ground and dragged into buses — triggering outrage across the country.
