Even though England was able to win the Lord’s Test match thrillingly by 22 runs against India in the third test match of the current Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, the team is in a big disappointment. The injured off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, who has played a crucial role in the victory because he took the last wicket of Mohammed Siraj, is out of the rest of the series since he fractured his finger while bowling in the first innings. He has now had to sit on the sidelines because the injury has kept him on the treatment table, and surgery is expected sometime this week.
As a countermeasure, England have included the experienced all-rounder Liam Dawson to substitute Bashir in the fourth Test to be played in Manchester on July 23. The 35-year-old Dawson last played a Test match in England way back in July 2017 and has to his name just three Test appearances. But, his regularity in domestic stints with Hampshire, especially the County Championship, bore good fruit as he has got a much-awaited recall into the team.
Dawson played out of his skin in recent times. His dominance in the local circuit was emphasised through his being named PCA Player of the Year in the years 2023 and 2024. Liam Dawson richly earns his call-up. As stated by Luke Wright, who is the national selector in England, he has been in exceptional shape and he has continued to perform outstandingly on behalf of Hampshire.
In the meantime, Sam Cook and Jamie Overton are back with their county clubs and are to engage in the County Championship further.
England Cricket, in an official announcement through Instagram, added its support toward the young spinner, saying, “We wish him all the best. Goodbye @Shoaib_Bashir13.”
Ben Stokes, player of the match at Lord’s for his all-round performance, has been leading the way as England carry a 2-1 lead into the fourth Test.
