On Day 10th Skipper Savita Punia staged a spectacular victory of the Indian women’s hockey teamto beat New Zealand 2-1 in shootout and win the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games here Sunday. This is the team’s first medal at CWG in 16 years. Leading 1-0, India conceded a penalty corner with less than 30 seconds to go for the final hooter, as the match went into shootout after Olivia Merry’s equaliser.

Meanwhile, Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu stormed into the final of the women’s singles badminton after beating Singapore’s Jia Min Yeo in straight games in the semi-final on Sunday. The former world champion  is looking for her 3rd successive singles medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Nitu Ghanghas staged a supreme attack on opposition Demie Jade Resztan from England in the women’s minimumweight category to give India its first gold medal in the sport at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The first Indian boxer to take the ring, the 21-year-old Nitu, competing in her first CWG, looked completely in control throughout the nine minutes, giving the home boxer no chance.

Just minutes later, Panghal bettered his silver from the last edition as he out-punched European Championship silver medallist England’s Kiaran MacDonald by a 5-0 verdict in the men’s flyweight.
