Chennai Super Kings (CSK) look up to their rivals for inspiration to bounce back this IPL season after a dire eight matches that have left them languishing at the bottom of the points table, something Stephen Fleming shrugs off. Fleming recalled RCB’s surprise turnaround from the last season when they pulled off an unlikely turnaround: from last position in the table, they managed to sneak into a playoff spot.

“As far as our hopes for winning six out of six goes, some will giggle at that but, for us, RCB set a blueprint for that the year before. RCB had started IPL 2024 on a woeful note, having lost just one of their first eight matches and lying at the bottom of the table, with playoff hopes almost gone. But they turned the tables, winning their final six matches to finish fourth and qualify and had their final victory thankfully against CSK.”

Though CSK are messing up the league form this time, the unexpected nature of the struggle is such that they are in a similar position — they need to lose no game and win all the remaining six matches — to hang on to any hopes of a playoff berth. They are optimistic but also weighing up the reality that they may not climb to the top, Fleming admitted.

“All the while there’s still a chance, but certainly one eye on us picking the best players for the next game, if it doesn’t go our way we want to get the most out of a disappointing season,” he explained.

Asked if CSK were going through a crucial transitional phase that could define their future, Fleming responded to remarks made by MS Dhoni, stating that the team might be facing a phase in their future.
