Two of the most famous sides in the IPL 2025, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), have a fireworks start to their season. There is a legacy of titles iconic moments, and both sides are now fighting for momentum with their respective scores dangerously close to the bottom of the points table.
However, defending champions KKR have won only two of the five games so far and saw a tough defeat when they travelled down. On the other hand, CSK is even sunken in the situation, having lost four out of five matches. Every time, these losses have followed a painfully familiar script – hopeless batting while chasing and the team failing, again and again, to get close to the target, as they did in the solitary win over Mumbai Indians.
However, CSK have not chased an opponent total greater than 180 even a single time since 2018. But their batting lineup, which has had patches where those looking to win the India head coach vacancy guidance signal, has looked frail, lacking explosive starts and consistent contributions from the middle order. MS Dhoni had come as a number five in their last clash against Punjab Kings, and it brought a glimmer of hope in whatever little that there was. His quickfire 27 off 12 balls seemed to show he still has the ability to shift the momentum, and CSK could have done with the rather than a bit late.
Further changes might be necessary. With CSK’s consistent need for a better powerplay performance, Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is struggling at number three, can do well if he is returned to the top slot. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra have been steady but not aggressive enough for CSK at the top.
Meanwhile, Mitchell Marsh had a strong start at the top, after which he was outgunned by a Nicholas Pooran blitz for KKR. There are positives, though — Rinku Singh’s unbeaten 38* off 15 balls and the rejuvenated Ajinkya Rahane at the top. The problem with the bowling has been inconsistent.
