The Indo-US tennis duo Sania Mirza and Christina Mchale could not make it through the finals of the Cleveland Championship. They lost against Japanese duo Shukho Aoyama and Ena Shibahara in 7-5, 6-3 sets. The women’s doubles match lasted for about 1 hour 30 minutes.
Both Sania and Mchale gave a tough competition to their opponents at the beginning of the match. But they started losing pace from the 11th game. In the second set, the Japanese duo rocked the game and did not give respite to Mirza-Mchale and straightaway won the title.
On the other hand, Aoyama and Shibahara have managed to win for the 5th time this year. They have won 8 titles together as a team in women’s doubles events. Aoyama has 17 wins in her kitty as part of the women’s doubles event. She thanked the American crowd and her partner after their win. “American crowds have such a big voice, I thank you for that. And thank you Ena for playing with me”, she said.
Sania will next head to New York to play women’s doubles in the US Open in the final grand slam of the season. She has been called for a wild card entry into the game. As this is her first final of the season, Sania Mirza added 180 ranking points into her repertoire. She also earned $3000 as prize money in the Cleveland Championship.
