India has caused worry for Captain and bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who departed in the middle of Day Two of the New Year’s Test in Sydney due to doubts that relate to his fitness. Bumrah’s injury update came when he was seen walking off the field and then strolling out of the dressing room with a doctor and a security officer, which made fans and the cricketing world anxious.

Bumrah had been under pressure to handle the workload on the ongoing tour. In the nine innings that he has played, he bowled 152.1 overs and took 32 wickets at an overall average of 13.06, which raised questions about whether his body has taken a pounding due to the intense bowling. He even announced Bumrah’s injury news when he became the Indian bowler to take most wickets in Australia, exceeding Bishan Bedi’s record.

Before limping out of the field, Bumrah had been a runner for the last three of the five overs in the morning session. He was below par at the post-lunch session when his speed fell to the low 120s early 130 kph. He also left the playing arena after bowling one over. This created plenty of concern, considering that the Bumrah update was accompanied by visuals of him exiting the SCG in a car, which usually prompted lots of speculation regarding an injury.

There were questions about what happened to Bumrah before this series and, more particularly, after the India vs Australia Melbourne Test in which Bumrah bowled 52 overs. Rohit Sharma gave voice to those concerns after that match and then India started worrying about over-bowling Bumrah. There has been no second in command to take charge when the skipper is occupied, which is why Virat Kohli had to lead the side for a middle session on Day Two.

After the 17th over of the third innings, Jasprit Bumrah returned to the Indian dressing room after the scans.
