On Saturday, India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer was taken to a Sydney hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) because of a life-threatening injury he sustained during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The injury occurred after Iyer had taken a maximum effort catch to dismiss Alex Carey, however, during the effort, Iyer suffered a direct blow to his left rib cage, leading to internal bleeding.
Reports indicate that a quick diagnosis and prompt immediate action by the BCCI’s medical team were critical for saving his life. After the injury occurred, Iyer was brought for important scans indicating a laceration to his spleen. The BCCI later confirmed he was medically stable and recovering under expert observation.
The board has noted the medical team is clinically monitoring Iyer through specialists in Sydney and India. The Indian team’s doctor has remained active and in Sydney for monitoring Shreyas Iyer’s treatment. As of Monday evening Iyer was still in recovery but out of danger or the ICU and had close friends visiting him, with a family member expected shortly.
