The BCCI will discuss the central contracts of the top India batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the Annual General Meeting of the apex council that will be held on December 22. The virtual meeting will also address the contracts of the women’s domestic players, as it will be part of the wide agenda of the meeting.
The cricket board’s top officials will review the possibility of Kohli and Rohit (both of whom have not played any Test cricket and T20Is in the last year) remaining in the high-ranking category of A+ along with Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, according to reports. In the 2024-25 cycle (1 October 2024 to 30 September 2025), both players were still in the A+ bracket mostly because of retrospective placement associated with their Test contributions in the prior years.
Though, since neither of them currently plays Test or T20I matches and are only featured in ODIs, the risk of a Grade A demotion is now a very real prospect. They would be earning less by INR 2 crore, which means that their annual wages would decline to INR 5 crore in case they were moved down. The existing contract structure of the BCCI includes annual retainers, the cost of which is INR 7 crore (A+), INR 5 crore (A), INR 3 crore (B), and INR 1 crore (C).
In the meantime, the current Test and ODI captain of India, Shubman Gill, is under consideration to become an A+ player. Grade A Gill is currently thought to be receiving an upgrade owing to his growing leadership position and his overall performance. Others likely to maintain their A+ include senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has been recently appointed as a vice-captain in a Test series, and bowling powerhouse Jasprit Bumrah.
