A major development in fruitful Indian cricket is said to be that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has almost finalised Jasprit Bumrah to lead for Test matches instead of Rohit Sharma. India’s tour of England in June and July 2025 is expected to be this transition.

Apart from his big skills as a fast bowler, Bumrah’s leadership potential is one big reason behind this decision. With the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar having a tough call to make about Bumrah’s participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy, he was uncertain about his future. A report was submitted by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) medical team, led by Nitin Patel, that although Bumrah’s most recent scans were clear, he had not yet started bowling at full intensity.

Consequently, the selectors and team management chose not to risk him with the Champions Trophy only a week away. They believe that it is more important to ensure Bumrah’s long-term fitness, which is an important aspect since, on the back of his consistent successes in Test cricket, he is likely to lead India’s Test team in the near future.

BCCI has been closely watching Bumrah’s leadership skills since he was appointed as Test vice-captain. Despite being a frontrunner for the captain, his calm demeanour, intelligent thinking, and capacity to handle pressure have impressed the board.

On the other hand, though India is captained by Rohit Sharma, who has led them in all forms, he could be out of the Test squad. Bumrah is going to take charge in this new era of Indian Test cricket, which the selectors are looking at. If the captaincy goes ahead, it will see him take charge with the heavily anticipated England tour, which will bring India’s red-ball team into a new era.
