The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), in a decisive move to deal with age fraud in Indian cricket, has come up with a new regulation, which includes a second bone age test on the junior players. This was done after another controversy arose over the young sensation of the IPL 2025, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who has been alleged to have given the wrong age.

Suryavanshi is a left-handed batting sensation represented by the Rajasthan Royals and got the headlines this year as he was bought in the IPL mega auction by the team in INR 1.1 crore deal, allegedly becoming the youngest player to receive an IPL deal. But a few weeks after his signing, there were allegations that the player who was registered in official records as being 13 years and 288 days old was actually 15 years old by the time of signing.

Naturally, the scandal flared up when Vaibhav made a record-breaking score of a century in the IPL, and some old video appeared on the Internet, on which the young cricketer claimed to be born on a different date. Again, the video has increased further questioning though its authenticity has not been confirmed. Sanjiv Suryavanshi, the father of Vaibhav, was defending his son by stating that his son had already played the U-19 level in India and had been tested in terms of his bones at the youth of an 8-year old kid. It does not scare us. Another test can be taken by him, he said.

The BCCI now fixes the age of cricketers based on TW3 method of bone test and then a factor +1 is added to determine future eligibility. This procedure however has seen some players disqualified in lower categories because of slight mathematical variations.

In order to curb this problem, BCCI has now made it a compulsory procedure that a second bone test will be conducted in the next season among the players of the under 16 levels. According to a BCCI official, the new rule will mean that the decisions are not made on any hard and fast calculations, but rather on the scientific merit of the decisions, which is the best thing about the board trying to ensure that there is fair play and integrity in junior cricket.
