The All India Senior Men Selection Committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, is preparing to announce the India squad in the next tour to Australia, which includes five T20 International matches (T20Is) and three One Day International matches (ODIs). The series will commence on October 19 in Perth, and the future of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli is firmly under the spotlight. The two veterans also retired from Test cricket this year, and this was the last time both represented India at the ICC Champions Trophy. The two had speculated that they could have been included in the India A series against Australia A, but they opted to do personal training instead.
In accordance with the latest news, it is expected that the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) will take Rohit Sharma off the captaincy in the ODI. Shubman Gill is said to be competing to occupy the position. The leadership of the future is considered to be Gill, who has already led the Indian Test team on the England tour. Giving him the reins at this point, the BCCI expects to give Gill time to prove himself as a leader and create a competitive team to compete in the next ODI World Cup, which will be held in two years.
Even after the switch of captaincy, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are likely to belong to the ODI team of the Australia tour. This is a middle ground between future planning and the exploitation of the experience of the more experienced players in India. As Rohit may eventually be replaced by Gill, India will be able to nurture a younger core whilst still retaining the quality and experience that comes with the elder players.
The next series of games with Australia can be regarded as a key chance for Shubman Gill to stabilize in his leadership position before the World Cup.
