Almost a month following India’s lacklustre performance in a 0-2 Test series whitewashed against South Africa in the country, a rumour was voiced about a possible change to the national team’s red-ball coaching arrangement. It was reported by the media that the BCCI had inquired the former India batter VVS Laxman to become a new coach of the Test team, informally.
The BCCI has however denied the report. On Sunday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia rejected the allegations as unfounded and once again asserted the complete trust the board put in the current head coach Gautam Gambhir. Saikia dismissed outright any idea that the board was seeking alternatives or intending to change its leadership.
It is entirely false and theorized news. It is being propagated by some well-known media agencies, though there is no truth in this perception. The BCCI had not done such steps. This is just fiction and not factual at all, Saikia said, when this report was heavily disapproved.
VVS Laxman has been a reputable name in the Indian cricket administration and had been associated with the position of the head coach in the past. Laxman was approached when the tenure of Rahul Dravid was approaching its close in the year previous and with Gambhir making to emerge as the top candidate last year. Nevertheless, the former India No.3, as per the report, turned down the offer and said he was happy with his present job as the Head of Cricket at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Although South Africa has been a down turn, Gambhir has had his own fair share of success in white ball cricket during his tenure. During his tenure, India has become champions in the ICC Champions Trophy in the ODI format and the Men’s T20 Asia Cup in September. These have enhanced his support by the board.
That being said, there are still concerns that pertain to the performance of India in red-ball cricket.
