The BCCI in a historic move has implemented a pay equity policy for contracted Indian women cricketers. The announcement by the board is the first step towards tackling discrimination.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Thursday, in a series of tweets said that the Indian cricket board is implementing a pay equity policy for its contracted women players.

“I’m pleased to announce BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted BCCI Women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket,” Shah tweeted.

With this the fees for both men and women for the Test matches would be Rs 15 lakh, every female counterpart in the ODI will be paid Rs 6 lakh while the T20I fee will be Rs 3 lakhs.

Indian Women Cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur lauded BCCI for espousing gender equality in sports. Kaur wrote, “Truly a red letter day for Women’s Cricket in India with pay parity announced for women and men”.

Mithali Raj, former captain of the India women’s national cricket team also expressed contentment with this decision thanking the BCCI Secretray on Twitter.
