On Wednesday, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) finance committee chairman Najmul Islam made it clear that in case of withdrawal of Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2026, the players would have to suffer the cost themselves, and that the board would not compensate them in this case. His statements are against the increasing uncertainty surrounding the possible consequences of possible withdrawal of the tournament, which is set to be hosted in India.

Reports which indicated that the BCB would make significant financial losses in case Bangladesh chose not to take part were all dismissed by Islam who said that it was the players who would bear the risk. He also affirmed that the members of the squad would not get reimbursement should the team decide not to participate in the global event.

The explanation is after the communication made to the International Cricket Council (ICC) by Bangladesh, which stated that it was not willing to travel to India because of security issues. Although ICC has tried to convince the BCB to change its mind, there is still a question mark over whether Bangladesh would take part in the tournament or not.

Political tensions between the two nations have complicated the situation even more. The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) recently ordered the removal of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman in the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders squad, which only served to exacerbate the existing scandal.

Najmul Islam, when asked about compensation, was very categorical to give any financial assistance to players saying that this would be irrational to set that precedent. According to him, no one ever requests the players back their money when they do not perform well in a series or a tournament and thus should not wish to compensate them on making decisions regarding participation.

The remarks made by Islam illustrate the strong position of the BCB on the problem and show that the players will not have any influence on the financial aspects in case of a withdrawal. The events have created controversies among the cricketing community with the countdown to the T20 world cup ongoing.
