On Thursday (September 4), veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra officially retired from cricket, ending his 25-year-long career. With reference to repetitive injuries and the need to give the upcoming talent a chance to shine, Mishra stated that the time had come to retire and leave the newly developed cricketers to take the centre stage.
“Today, after 25 years, I announce my retirement from cricket — a game that has been my first love, my teacher, and my greatest source of joy. This journey has been filled with countless emotions — moments of pride, hardship, learning, and love. I am deeply grateful to the BCCI, Haryana Cricket Association, my coaches, support staff, colleagues, and most importantly, the fans, whose faith and support gave me strength at every step,” Mishra said on his X account.
Mishra affirmed that he would continue to be involved with the sport as a coach, commentator and mentor to young cricketers. He will also keep entertaining the fans on his socials as well as his own YouTube channel, where he provides cricket knowledge and experiences during his playing days.
Amit Mishra joined the Indian cricket team at the start of the 21st century, and within a short time, he established himself as an Indian cricketer with his classical approach of attacking leg-spin, which was a mixture of flight, sharp leg breaks and a powerful googly. The national side had limited chances with giants like Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh holding the Indian attack. ODI debut followed in 2003 at a triangular series in Bangladesh, but he had to wait until 2008 to debut in Tests against Australia in Mohali. Mishra started off on a high note, taking a five-wicket haul in his debut and becoming only the 6th Indian to do so, and in the series, he scored an impressive 14 wickets in three matches.
