World Elephant Day is an international day where awareness of various aspects, such as the conservation of elephants, their environments, and various issues they face, is created. This day is observed every year on the twelfth of August, and the significance of the day helps raise awareness of the need to conserve great fossils and guarantee that they will be inherited in future.
It is necessary to familiarize ourselves with the history and purpose behind the celebration, as well as the means to do it. It was invented to celebrate the unique power, wit, and beauty of elephants and crazy about all the dangers that endanger them both in natural and unnatural conditions.
World Elephant Day has its antecedent from the year 2012. It was launched by two Canadian directors, Patricia Sims and Michael Clark, who, together with the support of many organizations for the protection of wildlife, tried to respond to critical threats to elephants. These are risks which endanger elephants through factors such as poaching, habitat loss and human-elephant interference – all of which have greatly reduced elephant numbers.
The reason for an August 12th awareness is that it corresponds to the time of the year when numerous elephant groups appear to be the most endangered by fluctuations in weather and rising human interference. The day was an attempt to raise awareness to the world on the necessity of protection of endangered species and call for action on behalf of these species.
African and Asian elephants also have important functions with regard to the functioning of ecosystems of the regions where they inhabit. They are known to be ‘keystone species’ because of the special role they play in their habitat. Their activities, for example, making waterholes and helping spread seeds, are crucial for the existence of other species and the ecosystem of those habitats.
World Elephant Day is a call to the people and communities of the world to take part in the conservation of elephants and wildlife, to support policies that protect them and to protect elephants in their natural environment.
