Vishwakarma Puja, also called Vishwakarma Jayanti or Vishwakarma Day, is a Hindu festival that is celebrated to worship Lord Vishwakarma, who is known as the god of architecture. This particular festival has great significance for the artists, craftsmen, engineers, and mechanics, and they celebrate the day by praying and conducting rituals with the hope of wishing for success and prosperity in their professions.
In the year 2024, it will be celebrated on Monday, 16th September, as Vishwakarma Puja. The celebration takes place on Kanya Sankranti, Bhadra Sankranti, in the Bengali calendar, where the ultimate blessings are received at 7:53 in the evening. It is the birthday of Lord Vishwakarma, who is known to have built the holy city of Dwarka & fashioned divine weapons for gods, signifying him as the god of creation, architecture, and mechanical arts.
On this day, people show their respect to lord Vishwakarma for the talents they possess and also to pray for their promotion in their fields. The rituals include cleaning and decorating the workplace, including tools and equipment used in trades, especially for Vishwakarma Puja. They are decorated with flowers and bright ornaments, which indicates how much the people of this stratified civilization honored such instruments.
The followers of Lord Vishwakarma put up idols or images of God in temporary shrines called pandals and perform special pujas in factories, offices, or workshops. Gatherings are made with sweets, fruits, and other things to seek God’s blessings and help the coming year be good. As a gesture of honoring the tools, they are unworthy to touch them again for the remainder of the worship and to honor the instruments of their trade, they are set aside.
Vishwakarma Puja holds a lot of importance in the cultural and spiritual context, especially for craftsmen and engineers.
