Kolkata: Bengali theater veteran Manoj Mitra, 86, known for his deep impact on art and highlighting social/political issues through humorous and imaginary works, died on Tuesday at a hospital in Kolkata due to age-related ailments. His demise marks the end of an era for Bengali cinema and theater.

According to medical professionals, Manoj Mitra, who had been dealing with health issues for a while, was admitted to the hospital on November 3rd with a number of ailments, including electrolyte imbalances and breathing problems.

A doctor said, “He was admitted with several illnesses. His condition kept on deteriorating, and today at around 8.50 am he left us.” The octogenarian was released at the end of the month after exhibiting signs of recovery from a hospitalization for similar problems in September.

After Mitra passed away, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sent her deepest condolences, calling his death an irreplaceable loss.

“Saddened by the demise of the famous actor, director, and playwright, ‘Banga Bibhushan’ Manoj Mitra, today morning,” Banerjee shared on social media platform X.

Acknowledging his profound legacy, she added, “He had been a leading personality in our theater and film worlds, and his contributions have been immense. I convey my condolences to his family, friends, and admirers.”

With his many plays that skillfully blended humor and insight to critique social and political structures, Manoj Mitra’s name became synonymous with Bengali theater. Mitra was particularly well-known for his critically acclaimed role in Banchharamer Bagan, the film directed by Tapan Sinha and based on his play Sajano Bagaan. His skill set also included working with renowned filmmakers, appearing in classic Satyajit Ray productions like Ganashatru and Ghare Baire.

The versatility of Manoj Mitra’s roles in the films of other well-known directors, such as Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Basu Chatterjee, Tarun Majumdar, Shakti Samanta, and Goutam Ghose, further demonstrated his talent. He constantly added variation and realism to his portrayals, whether he was playing antagonistic or humorous roles.
