The Islamic calendar has no basis in the lunar cycle, rather the beginning of each month is dependent on the sight of the new moon. Therefore, it is highly significant when the crescent moon is sighted prior to Ramadan because this is the start of the holy month of fasting and some other religious observances.
Fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the holiest things for many Muslims, who practice fasting from dawn to dusk to pray, give to charity, and act spiritually during the month. A fast during Ramadan is considered one of the five pillars of Islam and symbolizes a discipline of the self, a devotion and a gratitude. According to this, the gates of heaven are opened, and there is blessing in multiplying.
When Does Ramadan 2025 Begin?
The start date of Ramadan differs in each of the countries according to moon sighting. The expected start dates of Ramadan 2025 in various regions are:
Saudi Arabia: March 1, 2025
India: March 2, 2025
UAE: March 1, 2025
Pakistan: March 2, 2025
Bangladesh: March 2, 2025
Muslims’ fast (Roza) starts from the time of dawn (pre sunrise) and breaks at the time of sunset during Iftar. They recite particular prayers (duas) before and during their fast for blessings and acceptance, before starting and ending their fast.
Dua for Keeping a Fast (Roza Rakhne Ki Dua):
“Wa bisawmi ghadin nawaiytu min shahri Ramadhan.”
I am going to pass tomorrow in the month of Ramadan.
Dua for Breaking a Fast (Roza Kholne Ki Dua):
“Allahumma inni laka sumtu, wa bika aamantu, wa ‘alayka tawakkaltu, wa ‘ala rizq-ika aftartu.”
Translation: “O Allah! I fasted for You, I believe in You, I was put on trust in You, and You, You gave me sustenance to break my fast.”
While Muslims around the world prepare for Ramadan 2025, they are reflecting, being charitable, and devoted.
