“It is truly in our hands to create a better world for all who live in it. The Nelson Mandela SDGs Quote Book is a reminder of the impact that a single individual can have on the world”, wrote United Nations on its official X account.
Mandela Day History
In 2009, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) established the day as Nelson Mandela Day. Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician who served as the first President of South Africa. During his tenure from 1994 to 1999 he served as the nation’s first black head of the state and first elected president in a fully respresentative democratic election.
South Africa has faced range of challenges including unemployment, food insecurities, poverty, rising cost of living, and so on. According to UNESCO the symbolic gesture encourages individuals and communities to dedicate 67 minutes to volunteer work.
18 July 2024 marks the 106th birthday of Nelson Mandela. This year the theme is dedicated to combating poverty and inequality. This theme underscores the persistant battle against socioeconomic disparities and therefore, the United Nations urge individuals and communities to tackle the challenges proactively.
