The colourful festival of Ganesh Chaturthi commenced in India with great religious fervour and spirit today in Mumbai, regarded as one of the largest celebrations, at the Lalbaugcha Raja pandal. Since midnight, hundreds of devotees gathered in the area seeking the blessings of Lord Ganesha, thereby forming long queues across the streets. Technology, religion, humanity and music all came together to chant Ganpati Bappa Morya, as people of the city celebrated together.
Lalbaugcha Raja, ‘the King of Lalbaug, is one of the busiest pandals during the Ganesh festival that lasts 10 days. There is a great public turnout with people going to great distances to take a look at the idol, waiting in the queues all day. Lalbaugcha Raja was infectiously exhilarated first glimpse on Sunday, leaving the fans in awe. The idol, wrapped up in the magenta color robe, aroused the interest of everyone by its magnificence and by the exquisiteness of the ornament. Positioned in Putlabai Chawl, it attracts lakhs of people annually; whether it is ordinary people or celebrities, everyone lines up to have darshan.
Vinayak Chaturthi (Ganesh Chaturthi) is a festival to honour the Lord Ganesha, God of wisdom, prosperity and destroyer of obstacles. His followers in India and the world over pay a tribute to him with songs, prayer temples and decoration of homes, and lit electric pandals. Individuals carry the images of Ganesha to their residences, take fasts, make traditional sweets, e.g., modaks and perform religious activities during the festival.
The grand visarjan at the end of the 10-day festival is where idols are submerged in either rivers, lakes or seas with chants of Ganpati Bappa Morya and the beat of dhol. The festival is also an event more than a religious festival and represents the Indian spirit of devotion, communal social cohesion and celebration.
